Haonan completed his BA and MA in China before joining the University of Exeter in 2018. He developed an interest in women’s writing during his MA programme which informs his current focus on British and Chinese New Woman literature. In 2018, he was granted full sponsorship by China Scholarship Council (CSC) for the subject of ‘New Woman Writing in Britain and China, 1893-1941’. This project is supervised by Professor Angelique Richardson at the University of Exeter and Professor Yin Zhiguang at Fudan University.
Haonan’s PhD project looks at the New Woman writing in both Britain and China between 1893 to 1941. This thesis explores the role of British feminism in the development of the empire, and the resistance of both British and Chinese feminists to empire, considering the compromise with, and the challenges posed to, racism, imperialism, and colonialism by feminist writers within the global context of imperial crisis and nationalist movements.
Haonan is a Teaching Assistant on the first-year Approaches and Criticism at the University of Exeter (2021-present). He was a Postgraduate Representative for the Department of English (2019-2020), and a member of the Organisation Committee of the 2019 Postgraduate Graduate Research Conference of the College of Humanities at the University of Exeter. He also teaches for The Brilliant Club, an award-winning university access charity which works with schools and universities across the UK, mobilising the PhD community to support disadvantaged students in accessing and succeeding in higher education.
