John Bailey is a Higher Defence Studies Programme funded PhD candidate examining the utility of social scientific expertise in security force assistance (SFA) programmes. His research is multidisciplinary in nature and focuses on the British Army’s conduct of SFA following its Army 2020 reforms.

He has extensive experience of stability operations including involvement in counter-insurgency, peace support, humanitarian assistance, stabilisation and capacity building deployments. He also has expertise in writing military doctrine for stability operations. 

He is a graduate of the University of St Andrews (MA (Hons) Mediaeval History and Archaeology and MLitt International Relations (Terrorism Studies)). He is a keen surfer and has an international cap for kabaddi having played for England against Iran in the 2007 World Cup in Mumbai.
