Laura Cox is a South West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership PhD student.

Laura Cox is an AHRC-funded PhD candidate, supervised by Professor Angelique Richardson (University of Exeter) and Dr Justine Pizzo (University of Southampton). Laura completed her MSt in English (1830-1914) at Trinity College, University of Oxford.

Her PhD thesis considers the roles, influence, and importance of landowning women, and women working with the land, in nineteenth-century Dorset, drawing on Thomas Hardy’s literary texts and correspondence. The project explores how women landowners, dairy maids, and field women were situated within their communities and looks at their integration and interactions with other businesses. The project is a literary and historical study centred on archival material, as well as periodicals, newspapers, census data and business directories.

Laura is the recipient of a Collaborative Doctoral Award and works closely with Dorset History Centre and Dorset Museum. She is a member of the Southampton Centre for Nineteenth-Century Research, Exeter’s Centre for Victorian Studies, and the University of Oxford’s Victorian Research Seminar group.
