I graduated cum laude from both a degree in History at the University of Milan (2011) and a master’s in Hellenistic History at the University of Bologna (2015). In 2012 I was selected for the Erasmus program and attended courses in Roman and Greek Historiography at the Ludwig Maximilian Universität of Munich. My PhD proposal on Macedonian identity in Roman Asia Minor was accepted at the University of Exeter in 2016 and awarded the International Classics Studentship. In 2018 I presented findings from my research at the IIERW (Imperialism and Identities at the Edges of the Roman World 4) conference in Serbia and at the Institute of Classical Studies in London. In 2019, I was selected for a Master Class entitled “Past and Identity” at the University of Groningen and I spoke at a workshop for the Centre for Connectivity in the Roman World in Exeter.
I investigate to what extent the appearance of the Macedonian ethnic, as a self-definition, or self-image, of the civic communities of Phrygia and Lydia was triggered by their interactions with the Roman Imperial authorities. I examine numismatic and epigraphic evidence, including civic coins and public inscriptions. I consider their chronological and spatial attributes in order to interpret their historic and cultural significance. This research is part of a wider examination of the role of external power in local identity formation.
