Hello and welcome to my page!

I am Ohud Alderaan, a lecturer of English at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia, since 2008. In addition to having taught a variety of English-related subjects, I have held several higher positions at the university.

I earned a Master's of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Eastern Michigan University, USA. My experience there as an EFL teacher of students from different cultures solidified my belief in the role of culture on how, what, and why teachers teach, regardless of what educational policies expect from them. I found myself keen on understanding how local (mini) cultures and the sociocultural features of students form and inform the ways teachers come to understand themselves as EFL teachers.

I also hold a Master's of science in Educational Research at the University of Exeter. This degree was helpful for me not only to learn a lot about the essence and the nature of educational research in social sciences, but also to know who I want to be as a researcher.

I'm currently a postgraduate student doing a Doctor of Philosophy in Education at the University of Exeter. My dissertation investigates the professional experiences and identities of EFL instructors in remote Saudi universities (those located in the sticks). I have a particular interest in the concept of ‘space and place’ and its impact on what teachers do and how they self-understand themselves as professionals in such a context with its economic, social, educational, and cultural particularities. Thus, my dissertation tackles issues of social justice, gender equality, teacher marginalisation, and university work systems in Saudi Arabia.
