Sophy Gardner is in the third year of a PhD studentship at the University of Exeter collaborative with the RAF Museum. A former RAF Wing Commander, she is researching the political fight for the RAF from its conception in 1917 to the end of the 1920s. She holds an MPhil and an MA from the University of Cambridge. Prior to her PhD, Sophy served for twenty years in the RAF including in Iraq, Afghanistan, the MOD and on a tour with the Royal Navy, and more recently has run her own business working with military charities and veterans. She is a founding member of the Defence Research Network, connecting Humanities PGRs across disciplines and institutions studying defence and military-related issues.
