Module Convenor
Events have become popular vehicles for economic development and urban regeneration, but they also contribute to and reflect wider changes in society and culture. This module aims to deepen students understanding of the principles and practices of managing events as well as assessing their impacts on economy, society, culture and the environment.
This module introduces the key features of the relationship between tourism and international business; it will identify elements of the business environment for international tourism businesses. Students will explore issues of strategic management and innovation in international contexts. Sustainability is a theme that runs throughout the module and discussed in terms of responsible and resilient tourism, along with managing risk, both internal and external.
This module develops a better understanding of the management practices in an international context and the various forces influencing and transforming the competitive landscape of the global economy. Exploring managerial processes, strategic approaches and cultural differences in international business operations.
Lecturing on Business Ethics, Corporate Responsibility, Resilient Management and Cultural Dimensions.
"This module provides students with a general and wide-ranging introduction to management studies and to the contemporary business environment. The aim of this course is first to introduce students to major currents in management thinking and to key developments in the world of business and management. The second aim is to help them to develop many of the skills which they are going to need in order to succeed both as a manager and in their studies at Exeter. In the process the aim is to enhance their confidence and their capacity to excel. A particular feature of the module is the strong element of team working that they will need to become involved with, building their capacity to work effectively with others in order to achieve and exceed objectives."
I designed 2 lectures based around presentation techniques and Harvard referencing. The aim of this was to ensure students felt comfortable about their presentations and public speaking. For some this was their first time presenting to an audience and the outcomes were very successful with all groups presenting very well and confidently. Further, my role was to mark their exam scripts and provide evaluation and feedback.
Mock interviews to MBA students
Lecture on evolving responsibility towards a more dynamic management system based around resilience and stewardship and co-existence business relationships.
"The module aims to provide a detailed theoretical and practical understanding of key issues and debates within transport geography and their relationship to emergent discourses in wider social science literatures that focus on ‘mobilities’ as a way of framing contemporary understandings of travel. Using a blended set of teaching methods, the module will introduce you to key issues using lectures, guest speakers, discussion groups and field trips. The module will focus explicitly on the relationships between theoretical framings of transport and mobility within policy discourses that have begun to stress the importance of ‘sustainable mobility’ at a range of scales and sites of practice."
"This module examines the contours of development and environmentalism focusing on the varying implications for social and ecological justice at different scales. It studies the complex intersections of mainstream development and sustainability efforts, addressing in particular the socio-environmental consequences that have been observed over the years."
As teaching assistant on this module my role was to develop a series of workshops to develop student learning of the previous week lectures. The workshops all differ and use various teaching methods, including Q&A, presentations, group discussion and other methods. My role was to encourage students to critique the human geographies of nature and society to develop a broad understanding of the main issues.
This was similar to Module GEO1110 except I was now asked to work solely with students on the Nature and The City part of the field class. This was a walk around Hyde Park discovering and examining nature and encouraging students to critique what they saw, felt and experienced.

"The module aims to provide an inter-disciplinary understanding of the approaches Geographers take to research and research practice. The module will introduce the major contexts in which modern Geography operates, including its historical roots, the development of the discipline since 1945, the relationships between the social and natural sciences within Geography and the enduring themes of space, place time and scale. During the second part of the module, students will be introduced to a range of methods and techniques commonly applied by Geographers, focusing on the links between the social and natural sciences."

"This module builds on the knowledge you developed in your first year and prepares you for undertaking your dissertation. In it we examine the research practices through which we create understandings of geographical issues with people (interviews, focus groups, ethnographies and/or questionnaires) and/or with things (documents, visual culture, material culture and/or digital technology). You will hear about, and practice, different research methods. In some of the lectures and seminars we more explicitly address your own dissertations, thinking about how to decide on a research question and design the research project."
I assisted lectures on:
Interviews
Visual Analysis

I have provided input to the Events Management module at the University of Exeter as well as putting together the Business of Adventure module and lectured to students on Entrepreneurialism and Innovation as well as advising students through the Alumni on employability and other enterprise actions.
For the future I am keen to progress Visiting Lecturing and perhaps develop a new module around Business of the Natural Environment.
In 2014 I am co-chairing a session at PECSRL 2014 in Göteborg, Sweden and also at MMV 2014 in Tallinn, Estonia. Also, I have recently presented to the Nordic Geographers Meeting in Iceland 2013 and the 2012 RGS South West Annual Lecture. The lectures were about ‘Balanced Business’ in Tourism Development in Nature and the Geography of Tourism in Yosemite.
